Where should Fort Hood families live—Temple, Belton, or Nolanville?
If you're PCSing to Fort Hood, Temple, Belton, and Nolanville each offer a different balance of commute, home options, amenities, and lifestyle. Ali Thompson and Mckenna Taggart of Home in Texas Team help military families compare these Central Texas communities before buying.
Moving to Fort Hood comes with a decision that can have a big impact on your daily life:
How close to the base do you actually want to live?
You don't necessarily have to live in Killeen or immediately outside Fort Hood's gates.
Many military families expand their search east into Nolanville or farther into Temple and Belton, especially when they're looking for newer homes, different neighborhood options, outdoor amenities, or a community that works for their family beyond the daily commute.
But there's a tradeoff.
The farther you move from Fort Hood, the more important commute time becomes. On the other hand, choosing your home solely based on the shortest drive to work can mean overlooking communities that might be a better fit for the rest of your life.
As a mother-daughter real estate team serving Temple, Belton, and the surrounding Fort Hood area, we help relocation buyers work through exactly this decision.
Here's how we'd think about Temple vs. Belton vs. Nolanville if you're PCSing to Fort Hood in 2026.
If you've been researching your PCS online, you've probably encountered both Fort Hood and its former name in older articles, maps, listings, and relocation guides.
The installation is officially Fort Hood again.
The U.S. Army redesignated the installation Fort Hood in 2025, with the current name honoring Col. Robert B. Hood, a Distinguished Service Cross recipient and World War I veteran.
So throughout this guide, we'll call it what the Army currently calls it: Fort Hood.
Older real estate listings and online resources may still use the previous name, but they're referring to the same installation.
This is one of the first questions you should answer before looking at individual houses.
If getting home from Fort Hood as quickly as possible every day is your number-one priority, your search will look different from a family's search if they're willing to drive farther for a particular neighborhood or lifestyle.
Think beyond your first morning commute.
Ask yourself:
Your answers can quickly narrow down whether Nolanville, Temple, or Belton makes the most sense.
Nolanville deserves a look if you want to live outside Killeen while remaining relatively close to Fort Hood.
Located east of Killeen along the I-14 corridor, Nolanville puts you closer to the installation than most Temple and Belton neighborhoods.
That can be a major advantage when you're reporting to Fort Hood every day.
Instead of automatically searching Killeen because it's closest to base, Nolanville gives you another option without pushing your commute as far east as Temple.
Nolanville's housing market can also present opportunities for buyers to negotiate, depending on current inventory and the individual property.
But don't assume every house is automatically a good deal simply because it has been sitting on the market.
Your agent should help you look at comparable sales, property condition, neighborhood differences, days on market, seller motivation, and potential resale.
For military buyers in particular, resale deserves attention because you may receive another set of orders sooner than a typical homeowner expects.
Keep driving east and your options change considerably.
Belton, Texas tends to appeal to military families who are willing to accept a longer drive to Fort Hood in exchange for access to communities, outdoor recreation, and the broader Temple-Belton area.
This is where neighborhoods such as 3 Creeks and Dawson Ranch become especially interesting.
If you've already read our guide to living in 3 Creeks in Belton, TX, you know why we recommend that relocation buyers at least put it on their comparison list.
3 Creeks offers newer homes along with trails and outdoor amenities, and its location near Stillhouse Hollow Lake and the Lampasas River gives it a very different feel from neighborhoods closer to Fort Hood.
Dawson Ranch gives Belton buyers another established neighborhood option to consider.
This last point can be important.
Military families aren't always commuting to one place.
If one spouse works at Fort Hood while another works at Baylor Scott & White, the VA, a school district, or another Temple-area employer, choosing the shortest possible commute to Fort Hood may create a much longer commute for someone else.
Sometimes the right location is the one that makes both commutes reasonable.
Temple is another option military families sometimes overlook when they first receive orders to Fort Hood.
Yes, you're farther from the installation than you would be in Killeen or Nolanville.
But Temple gives you access to a larger city with major healthcare employers, shopping, restaurants, established neighborhoods, and substantial new residential development.
Temple can be particularly appealing if your household isn't completely centered around Fort Hood.
For example, North Point is one Temple-area new-construction community worth comparing if you want a newer home while remaining connected to the Temple-Belton area.
Temple also gives you more directions in which to expand your home search.
Instead of limiting yourself to one subdivision, you can compare northwest Temple, west Temple, south Temple, Belton, and communities between the two cities.
That's one reason working with a Fort Hood relocation specialist who also knows Temple and Belton can be valuable.
You don't want someone simply sending you houses based on a ZIP code.
You want someone helping you understand what living there will actually mean.
Nolanville | Belton | Temple | |
|---|---|---|---|
Fort Hood access | Closest of these three | Longer commute | Longer commute |
Community feel | Smaller city | Smaller-city feel with established and newer communities | Larger city |
New construction | Available | Strong options | Strong options |
Neighborhoods to research | Nolanville communities | 3 Creeks, Dawson Ranch + others | North Point + established Temple neighborhoods |
Outdoor recreation | Central Texas access | Strong lake/trail opportunities | Parks and regional recreation access |
Shopping/services | More limited locally | Access to Belton + Temple | Most extensive of these three |
Good fit for | Commute-focused buyers | Lifestyle/community-focused buyers | Buyers wanting broader city amenities |
These are general comparisons—not guarantees about a particular home or commute.
Always test the actual drive from a property to the Fort Hood gate you'll use, especially during the hours you'll normally be commuting.
We think 3 Creeks deserves its own consideration because it represents the exact tradeoff many military families are trying to evaluate.
You're choosing a longer commute to Fort Hood than you'd have in Nolanville or Killeen.
What do you get in return?
You get access to a master-planned Belton community with newer homes, miles of trails, outdoor amenities, proximity to the Lampasas River and Stillhouse Hollow Lake, and access to the broader Temple-Belton area.
That doesn't automatically make it better.
It makes it different.
If you spend five days a week on Fort Hood and absolutely hate driving, 3 Creeks may not be your answer.
If your family values the community and location enough to accept additional drive time, it's worth touring.
This is exactly why we encourage PCS buyers to experience the areas before deciding from a map whenever possible.
North Point is another community worth putting on the list if new construction interests you.
It gives you a Temple address and access to the Temple-Belton area while still allowing you to commute west toward Fort Hood.
For military families comparing North Point with Nolanville, we'd look beyond the houses themselves.
Compare:
North Point → Fort Hood
versus
Nolanville → Fort Hood
Then compare the houses, neighborhood, daily conveniences, your spouse's commute, and what each location gives your family when you're not at work.
A beautiful kitchen isn't going to make you happier if you resent the commute every morning.
Likewise, saving time on your commute isn't automatically worth it if your family strongly prefers another area.
Your Basic Allowance for Housing is obviously part of your housing budget, but we wouldn't recommend treating your entire BAH as a target purchase payment.
Your actual affordability depends on much more than your rank.
You need to consider:
If you're using a VA loan, you may be able to purchase without a traditional down payment if you meet eligibility and lender requirements, but that doesn't mean every home at the top of your approval range is financially comfortable.
Your lender can help establish the numbers.
Your Realtor can then help you understand what those numbers actually buy in Temple, Belton, Nolanville, and the neighborhoods around Fort Hood.
Buying your first home while PCSing can feel like two major life events happening simultaneously.
You're learning a new duty station and learning how to buy a house at the same time.
Don't feel pressured to know everything before you start.
As first time homebuyer specialists serving Temple and Belton, Texas, one of the biggest things we can do is help you understand the process before you start making offers.
That includes explaining the difference between prequalification and preapproval, inspections, option periods, earnest money, appraisals, VA financing considerations, new-construction contracts, closing costs, and what happens between contract and closing.
And if you're shopping remotely, we can help you understand what you're seeing beyond the listing photos.
Temple, Belton, Nolanville, and surrounding Central Texas communities all have new-construction opportunities.
If you're interested in a builder, talk with your own agent before registering or touring model homes on your own.
The salesperson in the model home works for the builder.
Having your own Realtor gives you someone focused on helping you evaluate the purchase from your side of the transaction.
We can help you compare:
Military buyers can be especially attracted to builder incentives because they may reduce upfront costs or monthly payments.
Just make sure you're comparing the entire offer—not simply the biggest advertised incentive.
There isn't one answer for every military family.
Choose Nolanville if minimizing your Fort Hood commute is one of your highest priorities but you still want to explore options outside Killeen.
Choose Belton if you're comfortable driving farther and communities such as 3 Creeks or Dawson Ranch, lake access, and the Temple-Belton lifestyle appeal to you.
Choose Temple if you're willing to commute in exchange for access to a larger city, major employers, shopping, services, and a wider variety of neighborhoods.
And don't be surprised if your answer changes once you visit.
We've worked with relocation buyers who arrived convinced they wanted one city and purchased in another after actually experiencing the area.
That's normal.
The goal isn't to pick the “best” city on the internet.
It's to find the location that works best for your family, your budget, your commute, and your time at Fort Hood.
Not necessarily. Temple creates a longer commute than Nolanville or Killeen, but some military families decide the tradeoff is worthwhile because they prefer Temple's neighborhoods, amenities, employment access, or housing options. Test the drive from the specific neighborhood to the gate you'll use before making a decision.
Belton can be worth considering if you're willing to accept a longer commute. Communities such as 3 Creeks and Dawson Ranch give buyers alternatives to neighborhoods immediately surrounding Fort Hood, while Belton's location provides access to Temple and Central Texas recreation.
It depends. Your expected ownership period, transaction costs, mortgage terms, local market conditions, potential resale value, and possibility of another PCS all matter. Buying isn't automatically better than renting simply because you receive BAH. Talk through the numbers before deciding.
If you're PCSing to Fort Hood, you don't have to figure out Central Texas from hundreds or thousands of miles away.
